This is the first v twin I own. I feel like maybe something is wrong with the engine, but don't know if its normal or not?

Might be the graphite gasket on the exhaust. If you do a search for "graphite seal" there are a bunch of threads on it.

Sounds about right to me, as well. Any particular noise in general you're hearing. They are not quiet motors from my little experience

Yeah nothing worrying from that clip. What is the sound that has you concerned?

Sorry to "leach" on yer thread, but mine also started making very troubling sounds!

Thought I noticed it a few days ago but it disappeared. Took the bike out yesterday and BAM! there it was again. Since I know my bike's rattling I know this is not right. It also dissapeared and then came back.

Took it outside today to listen to it - at first there was nothing but than I whacked a bit of RPM to it and the ticking was back.

You can here it quite obvious in this clip:

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure if it's from the clutch as it's pretty much the same level from both sides. Is it possible that a cam chain tensioner or the chain itself?

Could not sleep last night...

fazer that sounds very similar to the rattle/knocking i used to hear on mine, currently putting it back together after new cam chains, sliders and tensioners. I'll let you know the outcome.

Possibly rear header exhaust gasket for the first one and rear cylinder timing chain for the second - re the latter, check your oil/filters and coolant/water pump as a slapping rear cam chain can be the first sign of a failed water pump seal (coolant in the oil affecting hydraulic cam chain tensioner).

Holy krap....

By looking at the oil tube it looks ok, black and without bubbles or stuff like that.

What should I look for?

Poke a bit of wooden dowel down through the oil filler plug and inspect that for clearish liquid on top of the oil.

If you do drop the oil and remove the filter it might look wavy like this

That is another sign of a gone WP seal

Thanks for all the responses. I'll check the exhaust gasket and the oil filter on my next oil change.

thanks steve I will have another go tomorrow, thinking it might be timing chain, but not sure how the crash would have affected that, I had a lowside at 120+ luckily it slid a fare bit down the track before going on the grass, I got up unmarked apart from a soare arse, I will read a few more posts and try some other things

tilt switch would have turned it off,by the time I stopped slidding then rolling on the grass thanked I was in one piece it was off, sounds like its coming from cam chain gonna take the rocker cover of and inspect, I replaced the wp seal less than 500 miles ago but gonna check the oil filter anyway the noise goes away when reved up then comes back at tick over so when under load the chain is under more tension, that's what I think
