engine cutting out under hard braking

hi all,

ive noticed that my 07 SD will cut out when under hard braking. the fuel level when it cuts out is less than half a tank but not enough to make the low fuel light come on.

is this normal? i can understand it cutting out when there is only 2 litres of fuel or so in the tank but its still got a fair bit in there.

thanks

This is very common amongst the track riders here. Best way to fix is by stuffing the tank with baffle foam, this stops the fuel sloshing about and moving away from the pump. Costs about £40.

Or you just make sure your tank is brimmed before every track session I prefer to use the foam though just in case no time to refill between sessions.

How much does the foam decrease the range of the tank?

Foam in the tank has very little affect on the tank capacity if I remember correctly as it is incredibly porous..... Klinky has it in his so I'm sure he'll be able to give you a better idea.

Foam does help but you have to make sure it gets down around the pump. The design of the tank has a lip to help stop fuel moving forward, this also makes it hard to get foam down there. I have just rebuilt my fuel pump as it was shockingly bad. Cost £60 for the kit and I'm hoping that a mix of that and foam should cure any hard braking/stalling issues.

You lose very little capacity from using foam. And you only really need it at the rear of the tank anyway.

filling the tank with 75% by volume foam will reduce the total fuel capacity 1.5-2%

Mine cuts under medium to hard braking when the map does not match the pipe.

Found this out when I bought it - Akro pipes plus a standard map and it was cutting out 25% of the time - really nasty when playing games in traffic however i suggest you plug in tune ecu and check it has the right map for your set up

Sloshing fuel is just one of the reasons that people have reported on this forum. Best to search and think fuel, fuel pump,
tank vacuum, roll over sensor, electrical connectors ...

question re. the use of foam in the tank.

Have any of you guys experienced problems with the "low fuel sensor" because of the use of foam ?

Will the design of the low fuel sensor work together with foam or .......

thanks

No problems with foam and the fuel level sensor is unaffected.

Here's a post talking about this.

Sounds a lot like what my bike was doing. I'd say check the fuel filter...

Good luck.

I also junked the paper filter in the pump and have fitted an external filter like Kowekiller did. Haven't had chance to test yet at speed but its running well at idle.[/quote]

Let me know how it works. I have had not one problem since I removed the stock paper filter in the tank and replaced it with the external fuel filter.
