Hi,
My engine gave up yesterday at track day. I was going 215 km/h on the main straight.. then the oil pressure light showed red light. After that there was some oil coming from the right side of the bike (opposite of clutch cover) and some metallic noise.. might be water pump because engine was running nice when came back to pit except the noise.
So the guestions are:
- rebuild or buy a new engine?
- any performance parts available to SD engine?
- does SD-R engine fit to SD chassis? any other problems with SD chassis and SD-R engine swap?

Neither until you actually know what is wrong.

Blueprint engine and high end internals. Hopefully there is a reputable machine shop/engine builder close by that you can work with. Build to suit...

I've pondered this myself if my LC8 ever dies. When my uncle's C5 Z06 broke a tooth on it's timing chain and bent a couple valves he decided to ditch the entire LS6 and swap a 440 ci monster in that so far has 650+ horsepower as opposed to the 550 he got from his extensively modified LS6. There's no replacement for displacement. If you're after real power, I think the RC8R engine is the only way to go. An SD on steroids will still struggle to get what a stock RC8R puts out, and I think KTM makes kits to take the RC8R up to 200 horsepower.
That being said I have no idea how difficult it is to swap an RC8R engine into the SD. There may be fabrication needed, as well as upgraded supporting mods such as a new clutch or fuel pump. That could get expensive really quickly, but like they say "you gotta pay to play". If you're pretty much happy with your SD's power than a simple rebuild and retune should do. I would compare the cost of a higher compression rotating assembly against the swap of an RC8R engine, as I'm pretty sure it won't be a comparison as far as power/torque is concerned.
As someone else said though I wouldn't spend a dime until I found out what was wrong in the first place. I'd hate to rebuild an engine and potentially damage it because of something like a bad oil pump.

I don't know how much support you have for replacing OEM engine parts in Finland but if push comes to shove you can use this US site

Update on this, clutch was the one that went broke.. it broke also the outer hub of the clutch and oil pump. So other parts of the engine should be ok

Update 2:
Ya, something was broke (20e part) and it needs to be replaced.. only way to replace it is to open the engine.. f*ck. It's gonna cost a lot of money

Strangely timely thread. My 2007 just eat an engine at my last trackday. The water pump shaft leak turned into an oil starvation issue when the filter clogged and the engine tore it's self apart at speed. Rebuild from my dealer is looking at $4500ish.
So, what's the world of engine builds or crate engines look like in the US? Anyone have pointers?

If you have time during winter I can give you contacts of one LC8 guru in Estonia. He has built many hillclimb LC8-s. Including nitro and other modifications. May be he can make better offer for rebuild.
