Help....I have a 2012 990SDR, new to me in the last week...
Couple of questions for those with more tech/spec knowledge...
There is a gear position indicator above the speedo...is this a factory-fit item? I can find no reference to it in the manual...
If so, it only displays up to 5, in 6th gear, it still displays 5, but is correct for all the other gears....any ideas?

Hey mate, it will be an aftermarket item only. Can you post a pic or failing that look for any writing on it so we can decifer what make/model it is. Mine is a Healtech GiPro X-Type and works flawlessly.

Ok that's different, someone has gone to a lot of effort with that. All i can suggest is to get in behind it by removing the 4 small windscreen screws and finding the make/model and doing the set-up again to see if that sorts it.

Comrade: That's really a lovely discrete install. My guess is that it is one of the universal led sort available everywhere on ebay these days. When they first came out they were very popular. You'd probably find some reference to them here on the forum if you use the SEARCH button.
They work by having a sensor on/next to the gear shift. That is probably the tell-tale sign.
Have you asked the previous owner about it?

If it's a Gipro unit, it will be connected behind the headlight between two white 3 pin connectors.
There will also be a single wire going to a white/blue wire coming from the speedo.
If that's the case, here is a manual with the setup instructions:

The Gipro uses revs and speed to calculate the gear the bike is in.

Thanks everyone for your input, I managed to get a copy of a set of instructions locally for a generic GPI...
Turns out it's the same as the Healtech, except it''s SIX on-off cycles....!
All working a treat now....
