high idle and cutting out

Got a problem with my Duke. Seems it developed a high idle 1900 rpm and the motor will cut out, hesitate when under constant throttle. The problem does not manifest during acceleration? I thought the problem might be the fuel filter. I have 23,000 miles on the original filter. Changed filter however the problem remains? I had a similar problem last summer, changed the voltage regulator(VR), problem solved.

Before I spend some more money on my diagnostic guess work, could someone send a picture of the big grey plug and where it is located. I don't know if this is the problem but I want to check it before buying another VR.

TuneECU is your friend here. Could save a fortune in Stealer bills and help you diagnose the problem.

What condition were the filter o rings in?

The filter was brown. The O rings had to be replaced.

Replaced VR with new aftermarket VR purchased from a company out of Sacramento, California. Went on a test ride Saturday am, bike ran great. Took it back out again later in the afternoon for another hour long ride, ten minutes into the ride the problem briefly appeared again and then went away?

I suspect there could be a short somewhere. When replacing the VR I noticed a good amount of oil all over the wiring around the left side of the battery box. It appears to be from the lower part of a hose connecting the oil tank with a metal tube. Will replace OE clamp with an adjustable clamp.

Did you pull the BGC apart?

Yes, pulled BGC apart, cleaned, applied electrical grease. I still think it must be a worn wire or bad connection. It could be the engine control unit.

I had a similar problem with an Aprilia RSV. Which turned out to be a failed ecu chip.

Update. Bike is better since replacing VR however, the problem remains but not nearly as bad or as often. Last week the 2007 OE battery gave up the ghost. Replaced with new Shorai lithium battery. Shaved off 6 pounds of weight.

Under hard acceleration the hesitation and cutting out never appears, it only occurs when on steady, constant throttle or when engine braking?

May take it in to a stealership for diagnostic check. Anyone in SoCal recommend a shop? The shop I use to take it to, 3 Brothers in Temecula is out of business.

Try syncing the throttle cables behind the left airbox cover. This fixed my similar symptoms. The front butterfly was lagging in opening off idle from the rear cause the cable was a bit too loose.
