If it's any constellation, I went out to see if I had anything that would fit but it turns out that the biggest hex key I have is only 10mm.

would it not be the same allen key that came in your tool kit for the front axle nut?

How bout trying to measure it with a scale or caliper? If you've only got inch measuring tools multiply measurement by 25.4 to get millimeters.

I'd do it but I'm currently 8,000 miles away from my bike.

It's 14 mm.

If you don't have a key/socket/whatever that size, you can always use a hex-head bolt (easy to obtain). Double-nut the bolt at the exposed/accessible end, and use a wrench on the inner nut to loosen the ignition cover bolt.
