Today I reset my Super Dukes to the "Comfort" settings in the Manual. I haven't had a chance to ride it yet, but while adjusting the preload in the rear suspension I noticed that I was able to rotate the whole shock slightly left and right. Is that normal, or is something loose that shouldn't be?

This is normal. There is some play in the shock mounting bolts and the shock bushings.

Tyler, something to bear in mind that I learned after getting my 990 - the ride quality seemed as bad as my old ZX-10R (the original C model) and I couldn't figure out why, as the previous owner said that he'd adjusted the rear shock to the "comfort" settings. One day I figured it out, managing to feel what it was doing when it rode a bump - I felt the spring compress (as it should) and then the shock extended too quickly and bounced my arse off the seat! The rear spring on the 990 is so strong that the "comfort" settings for the rebound damping are way too feeble to handle it. I got a screwdriver out and dialled in a few more clicks of rebound damping, back towards the "standard" setting and it rode much better after that.
