New 1290 using coolant?

Just a quick question evolving the coolant on a new engine. I have about 2,800 miles on my 1290, I noticed at about 2,500 that the coolant level in the overflow reservoir was below the minimum level so I filled it to the full mark. Tonight I noticed while still pretty warm that the level was down to the midway mark. My question is, is it pretty normal for a new engine to need to "burp" itself? Seeing as that was the first time I needed to add coolant and don't smell coolant in the exhaust. Just curious as to why it might be using coolant, if it's typical for a new engine to be "finding its equilibrium"?
