Preemptive water pump work 990

Hi Guys

I've recently bought a 990SD 2008 model with 7500 miles on the clock. Reading through the service history/MOTs the bikes been stood for a while covering only 600 miles in the last 18 months.

I've searched and read a few threads on water pump failures and I'm wondering if I should have the work carried out now rather than wait for a failure. I'm assuming being stood for a while may not be good for the pump.

The bikes been serviced, had a new battery and brake fluid change. Anything else to consider? The weathers not great here in Scotland and the roads are covered in salt so the bikes off the road for a few more weeks yet giving me a chance to sort anything

Thanks

With that mileage, shouldn't be an issue, or for a while yet - might be worth a look though and, having drained cooling system to access pump, flush out system in case of residual casting sand.

Suggest changing clutch fluid.

You can pop the radiator cap off and look for any debris that may have floated to the top, you can also check the lowest point of your coolant overflow container for any sand that may have collected in there. If you have any sand in your block this is where it would accumulate, but like No.47 said best to just flush your coolant.

You could pull apart, clean and pack the Big Grey Connector with some dielectric grease.

Mate. 7000 miles is nothing. Don't worry about the longevity of components like this at this mileage. It's basically a new bike. I'd just do a minor service, change the fluids, oils etc. and enjoy.

I did it as a preemptive repair at 9000 when I did the valve adjustment on my old SD. I might do the same with my 'new' 2008 bike. And I say might because I have been keeping an eye on the coolant level and it does not consume any and it is not contaminated with oil.

I just clicked 7500 today.

Hi,

I just had the 9K service done on my bike and the water pump re-build/system flush.

My bike was using a little coolant and I had a good amount of sand (I cleaned my over flow, and with in a few ride I had the same amount of sand back in it).

I can tell you the shaft of the WP was not too bad however the bearings were not in good shape (crunchy).

If you don't have any sign of casting sand your good, if you have and signs of casting sand keep an eye on your cooling system to see if you loosing any. If you are it might be a good idea to flush the system and do the pump as a preventative step.

This is a how-to I posted when I did my coolant flush.

Hi all,
apologies for hijacking someone elses post - ive just serviced my 990's water pump and have to refil the coolant - quick question: is the specified 50cms raising the front wheel an 'absolute'? or, as Captain Barbossa might have put it, "more guidelines than actual rules.."?

In short, will 40cms be enough?

IMO, if the bike could burp successfully at 40cm, KTM would have decreed so. I think I recall it burps better at greater than 50cm.

Hi All,
- further to previous post... I'm struggling with the LC8 water pump seal replacement - 3 attempts and each has failed. I followed the 'Adventure Forum' link and seem to have put it all together correctly - even bought the two 'special' tools; to slip the seal over the shaft and to press the seal in to the inner cover.
Any advice would be gratefully received...

Which bit are you struggling with? Have you bought the right, one of two, shaft/impeller?
