Hi All,
I have loved my SD 05, Standard airbox and exhaust since the day I bought it 8 years ago. To my surprise I loved the stealthy exhaust note which allowed me to ride hard without drawing too much attention.
Everyone moaned about the jerky fueling, but my bike seemed to run so well that I thought I would avoid messing with it, with regard to pipe and airbox.
The one down side is the exhaust smell which leaves me stinking wherever I go, clothes and hair. I have recently found myself using my other touring bike due to this and I would like to rectify this now and get back to the SD.
I am guessing, but I believe an Akra map is currently loaded. This would explain the rich exhaust and lack of surging and jerkiness.

My questions are ;
Do you think I am right in my assumption about the Akra Map,

Is there a quality smoothed map available for standard airbox and pipe that will leave me with no excessive exhaust smell,

Is there anyone reasonably near to me ( I live in north Derbyshire) that could download an alternative map onto my bike for me.

I thank you for reading and any advise or theory will be gratefully received.
Cheers, Dan.

My 990 track bike was mapped at a place called Projex (before I bought it).
Might be worth a call, they're based at Cradley Heath near Brum - check projexdyno.co.uk

Cheers for the info Scotty.
I am really looking for a forum member with the cable who could help me.

Why do you think that an Akra map has been installed if the bike has standard exhausts and airbox?

If it's because the previous owner sold the aftermarket silencers and replaced the airbag before they passed it on then they really should have reverted to stock map too. The Akra map is notoriously rich even with a free flowing airbag and exhaust so with the your standard set up It most be really, really rich which explains your fume issue. But if you are keeping standard I'd have thought a good KTM dealer would refresh your ECU for you back to standard.

If you have a PC you need to get a cable and a map from this forum or like me get a Power Commander and get a custom map made by a good dyno place. It will make a huge difference to the bike if you change anything from standard. To be honest, you should consider junking the standard exhaust and airbox. You wouldn't regret the difference in feeling they make to the riding experience. And when you get the exhaust off you will see how heavy it all is. Like seriously a lot of weight.

As mentioned Projex comes with a very good reputation, there's a lot of members on here who have used them in the past. I have always used HMRacing but they are down South but very knowledgable about setting up LC8 engines.

Comrade: I'm with Bic on this one. Just for interest consider making a backup of the map that's in the bike so you can compare with others and revert in the future if necessary.

Bic... I thought the smelly exhaust and lack of lean mixture issues pointed to the Akra map. I am really wanting to stay quiet re exhaust options, the airbox swap could be an option but really it is the smell I want to loose.
I am sure that I would enjoy the performance that comes with the upgrades but I have an old Buell that I love to ride bar the fact that it is too noisy, I don't want to make the SD the same.
An optimised standard map is what I would like to try first.

Dread,

I live in Derbyshire (Belper) and although I have Akras and a custom map from Projex now, when I first got the SD I did exactly what you want to do. I have a cable somewhere so you're welcome to borrow it or pop over to mine and have a go here. The maps are available on this site somewhere and the software's free. PM me if you want.
