Rear cam chain clicking!

Superduke (2006, 28000km)

3 hour ride, bike ran fine the whole way but after getting off I noticed oil on my boots and on the engine, inspection revealed a leak from somewhere on top of the rocker cover.

Pulled the cam chain tensioner and that is in one piece and seems to cycle through its whole range smoothly, guess that means its ok? Dropped the oil seems pretty clean. Water is clean and level didn't drop one bit.

Anyway if someone has any suggestions as to what I could do to diagnose this rather that just replacing random parts would be greatly appreciated!

Rear cam chain - swop over front and rear hydraulic tensioners to check rear is really OK,

Oil leak - standard air box? Check for oil in box leaking down onto rear cylinder head = blown balance shaft seal.

Are you getting a flicker on the oil light at tickover? Could be water pump seals and water in the oil. Check coolant levels.

Is it there from start up, or does it start quiet then get noisy ?

Well good times, have just put the bike back together with new front rocker cover kit, fresh oil, KTM filter and new rear cam chain tensioner, and guess what - the loud clicking is gone!!

Same noise was there briefly on start up, like 2 seconds, but then it was gone.

Was definately the same noise so it must have been the tensioner but whether it was due to the oil, filter or actual tensioner failure I'm not sure, the old one felt pretty much the same as the replacement but who knows.

Thanks, yeh is there any other signs to look out for there, will the coolant reservoir level change?
