Hey guys -
a fellow on the ADVrider site had a question that I hope someone might be able to answer for him - or at least point him in the right direction. I'll get him a link to this discussion so that he can be kept in the loop. Here is his dilemma, pretty well spelled out:
08 SD-R motor in 07 Adventure
Unfortunately I had to do a heart transplant on my Adventure this summer . The only suitable engine I could find was out of an 08 SD-R. I got the complete wiring harness with the donor engine along with the ECU. The only differences between the engines were the addition of a third wire (dead ground) on the coil and a third wire on the temp gauge at the throttle bodies. I modified the existing harness to accommodate the ignition coils and kept the original two wire temp gauge from the Adventure. I am still using the throttlr-bodies off of the Adventure which are a smaller diameter than the SD-R.
Long story short, the ECU from the donor engine caused many difficulties on initial startup. When I plugged in the bikes stock ECU, problems all disappeared! What I'm wondering is where to start as far as maps go? This is obviously a unique situation and I am by no means expecting perfection, but just curious which would be the best map to start with. I'm pretty sure I want to stay with the maps for the Adventure as the bike ran very poorly with the map on the SD-R ECU. I have removed the SAS and butterflies as well as adding a DNA filter and opened the exhaust with Lexx pipes. My main concerns are with the smaller TB's. I'm not sure if they will provide enough fuel, but my initial math says they should.
thanks in advance for any insight or help you guys might be able to offer this fellow KTMer.

No brainer, this one. (for me anyway). Get a pc3 or similar and get a custom map made at a good dyno centre. Job done. If the original ecu is better then start with this one and build on that.

I'd try a SDR mao that gets as close to the spec as possible and see how she runs. The different sized throttle bodies will probably cause you problems though and you may have to go the custom map route. You don't have the SDR bodies??

So to solve this problem logically:
a, fit 08 sdr throttle bodies
b, fit sensible tyres as the extra power will be spinning those semi knobbly compromise jobbies - which necessitates...
c, fit normal size wheels - you cant get Supercorsas for those spoked Penny farthing wheels.
Now you have an adventure than runs well. is still comfortable and carries a fair amount of fuel but cant go offroad worth a shit.
Congratulations you have just invented the SMT.........4 years too late
