Anyone know if/how the unit can be opened up - no tail light but brake light OK - connectors and wiring checks out - spare unit works fine,

I think it's a sealed unit mate. Not entirely sure though because I'm used to looking at my clear Bike-Monkey LED one which is integrated with the indicators, not the red standard one.

Doesn't look as though it can be opened without damage.

I've never seen an R tail light up close but wouldn't it be possible to open it up by softening the glue with heat (by putting it in an oven, or by using a heat gun/hair dryer)? That's how the car tuning guys do their lights.
