Superduke - going into gear...

Hi guys,

Been the owner of a 2006 Superduke for the last couple of weeks and I'm finding when you put it into 1st gear it goes in with a real clonk (if you are to gentle you can feel the gears 'grinding').

I've tried bleeding the clutch etc but not made any differnce, is this just a normal trait for them?

Cheers

My '07 does it a little - I find holding the clutch in a few moments before dropping it in to gear helps, something to do with the inertia of the engine spinning the dogs round; engaging the clutch stops them so the gear engages without such a harsh *clack*.

Did you bleed both master and slave?

Mine is exactly the same and has been for the last 7k that I've had it..... They have tractor gearboxes! Don't worry!

When a wet clutch is cold you get viscous drag between the plates, this means that the clutch is pulled, the plates are parted, but they are still pulling on each other as if the clutch lever wasn't being pulled at all. It can cause stalling if the oil is very thick. Some suggest a thinner oil, but that would solve this clunk and ruin the rest of the engine over time, so let normal weight oil warm up to stop the clunk.

EDIT: if this is also happening when it's warmed up, you might need to replace the clutch springs or your plates/basket could be notched up and it could be dragging (getting caught up on the clutch basket ways).

This is an exaggerated badly notched ducati basket for example

I feel the tranny's shift pretty well. Mine does this too if i'm too tentative with going into first - I get in the habit now of dropping it into first with a good firm shift - sometimes it hits it right on the money and drops in perfect - other times it's a little clunky .. NORMAL .

Might be obvious but check your chain adjustment too. Give it some lube. Might be placebo but mine seems to go in easy after that.

Mine has clunked since day one brand new. Normal I'd say.

Bled the master, chain adjustment & lube good. Still the same, I'm going to treat it as normal

Cheers all
