Hi All,
I know I'm going to get shot down for this, but I need some help.
I'll admit to being a numpty, but I'm totally and utterly bewildered about the topic of 'mapping'. I realise that there are pages and pages of info about this on this forum, but I can't work out the wood from the trees.
I have a standard 2008 990 SD with Akrapovic Carbon-End cans. No other performance mods.
I fitted them myself, as the manual that came with them seemed pretty straightfoward. It even said in the manual that I could run them with the standard stock map. Happy days I thought.
Felt it was running a bit rough with baffles in or out.... at this point, I had no idea whether the manual meant I could run them on the standard map with or witout the baffles.
So I start to do a bit of research on SD-Net the the KTM UK forum, and now my brain is completely overloaded.
So, I guess my question is 3-part:
1. Am I OK to run them, baffles in, on the stock map?
2. Do I need a re-map if I want to run them with the baffles out?
3. If I do need a remap, should I buy a power-commander or just ask my local KTM dealer to do it. I guess I would then have to chose whether to run them permanently without the baffles or fit a switch to swap between baffles in or out.
I'm not bothered with getting maximum performance etc. I just like the sound the Akras make but want to make sure I'm not damaging anything by my sheer incompetence.
I'll now brace myself for either abuse or being ignored for asking such a duff question.
Cheers.

Go to the dealers and they can quickly download the Arka map. This is by far the easiest route, others will advise tune ecu and say the Arka map runs a touch rich (which is true) but its just fine and makes the most of the pipes.
Loading the Arka map also removes the power restrictions which are in place in the first two gears with the standard map so its a bit more frisky in the lower gears.
Don't know how much they would charge but shouldn't be much as it takes a few mins + a 15 min reset.
Have fun

Thanks Shadowman.
So, am I right in thinking that there's basically just one Akra map, for either baffles in or out?
Cheers.

Akra map is way too rich in my opinion. Waste of time! Get a proper map done with tuneecu or with a powercommander 5.
You can run the original map if you just change the cans only, it's rich enough too.

When I first put cans on mine I just ran stock map for a few months then put Akra map all it did was stink of fumes from exhaust and use more fuel.

Yep ran mine on the standard map both with and without baffles, no real issues.
Only went down the tuneecu road after fitting the motohooligan airbox.

KTM in Tewkesbury loaded the Akro maps in my '06 SD and charged £50, the fuel light still comes on around 76miles with 'normal' riding which was about the same with the standard end cans.
I was the same as you, being that I wanted the Arko's for the looks and sound, not bothered with extra performance. I was told that it could cause engine damage running the Arkro pipes with the std maps.
