I searched and didnt see a real thread on wheel removal.
To,take the rear wheel off you must take the stock can off, the directions say to do this but who reads those first anyways? Unbolt from the exhaust hanger 10mm socket the the clamp going into the cat is a torx found in ur tool bag or 10mm socket. The rear wheel nut is 60mm 6 pt. can find impact 3/4"drives on ebay $25USD and up. The rear nut is NOT a left hand thread like most SS arm bikes so lefty loosey does apply. Boom off.
The front wheel pissed me off. Brake calipers are Torx bits you have one in your tool bag i will update with size. The pinch bolts underneath the forks are torx bit or 10mm socket. The best part on the front wheel is the 12mm allen head axle nut. Most metric allen heads in the US goes to up to 10mm. So you can find a $35USD set (8mm-17mm) at advance auto or autozone. Unscrew a few turns and tap the allen head nut inwards till the axle pops out the other side to grab and pull out.
This maybe a useless thread but the 12mm front axle caused me to drive around looking for a unicorn and have had SS swing arm bikes in the past the left hand thread or lack of had me wasting time. Also in the manual the rear wheel nut is not listed as LH which is another dead giveaway but most people probably arent looking up rear nut specs in the back of the manual.

Yes i have owned plenty of bikes current stable is MV 312R, Victory Hammer, AMA prepped Gsxr600, and now the KTM (never owned before)TORX are not common on any they are all allen heads. Most oil drain plugs are bolts 12mm socket. the MV is a 10mm allen head to include the fill plug and the Victory is a 8mm allen head. Most drain plugs on vehicles made in the US that I have messed with are all sockets especially American made which would be a standard not metric. And our foreign made vehicles Which include my toyo tundra my wifes Audi S5 her past S4 and A4 are metric drain plugs or bolts not allen heads.Lastly the most common way to pull a front wheel axle is by sticking a ratchet extension into a spark plug socket in reverese and using the hex side in the axle nut (male into female).
So have you really owned anything more then ktm?
Btw my credentials are a certified A&P mechanic and im pretty good around anything mechanical so its safe to say a 12mm allen head is not common.
The torx i have but only a few so this was a learning experience to me on a KTM.

And you should probably not advise using phillips head screw drivers on the exhaust clamps and bolts under the forks.
These are Torx head, and this can damage them.
Not sure about the older SD's, but my SMT was just about held together with Torx bolts, and the 1290 looks the same.

Also your right on the rear axle nut shouldnt say RHT if thats normal way of going and should only say LHT if this was the uncommon way. But i did say i didnt read the directions at first. And like i also said most SS swing arms the rear axle nut is LHT and other bikes I have wrenched on do not say either way and most assume righty tighty to find out they have now torqued the piss out of the nut. Soo even no the post is done in a quick fashion maybe some one will get some useful info when they remove their wheels.
Like most threads on here it seems they are all post whored up with other jibberish its impossible to read thru the garbage to actually get the down n dirty of the original topic
