dudes, i am overhauling my forks and ordered a seal/bushing kit for the forks (KTM part# R14009)* for my 07SD
i have a few questions...
the KTM parts fiche doesnt list the O rings for the fork caps, anybody know where you can order WP parts specifically?
the *kit comes with retaining rings, seals, dust covers, spacers & bushings.
there are also 2 copper crush washers included (15mm dia.) but not listed on the fiche, what are these for?
are they part of holding the cartridge assbly to the forks?
there are also 2 strips of flexible fibre material, maybe 0.04' thick x 3.5"L x 3/16"W (also not listed on the fiche...) with interlocking ends, these look like they
wrap / shim around something, what are these for? any ideas?...

according to a suspension guy, the o rings do not need to be replaced, they are reusable typically
the "strips" are piston rings inside the cartridges, should have read the manual in the first place!

I know i'm in the uk but these days I just go to the local bearing and seals supplier with parts in hand and I get the parts I need. Considerably cheaper than the OEM parts for all the bikes I tinker with.

man i did about 5 hrs of research and talked to couple of techs at WP, i feel i have a much better understanding of the forks. i hate just blindly doing maintenance, i like to know whats going on inside how it works.
between talking to them and quite a bit of online reading i feel confident in tearing my front end apart. i know some of you guys dont like the feel of the suspension on our bikes, but after talking to several people WP and other suspension guys, im pretty impressed with the build of our SD.
i talked at length with a former KTM tech guy who was saying how robust the LC8 is. i mean there are little things for sure, (ill be the first to tell ya!...) but over all he was saying it should run a long time and regular street riding isnt really taxing the engine/suspension at all. i was telling him that i was amazed that my fork seals never leaked after all the badly landed wheelies, he said the suspension was way under stressed/over engineered for that kind of abuse. all good as i plan on keeping this bike a looong time, or at least till the 1290 comes out!

When KTM technician talks about it, its a brainwash However yes, suspension is impressive - combination how firm is it and how good the handling is on less than ideal roads. For comparison I have one car with firm suspension, its also great on ideal roads - but is a crap ride everywhere else. SD suspension is a whole different world.
