Looking at powdercoating top and bottom yoke black.. Was wondering what it involves? Do you have to remove any bearings... not sure if i'm up for that...

Nope Davey, shouldn't be hard at all. You'll just have to support your bike somehow, with a mid engine stand or a tie-down/nylon rope set-up around the front of the frame at the steering head. I've seen some guys support it from roof trusses etc in their garages.
Once the bike is supported, it'll be a simple job to pull the front clipers, then the front wheel, remove the handle bars, take off the bolts for the front mask & brake lines, loosen the triple trees, slide the forks out & then disassemble the top collar nut while holding the bottom triple tree (so as it doesn't drop out). That's pretty much it....if you have a dirt bike, basically the same story. You can then also grease up your steering head bearings while you're at it....good luck, I think black triple trees will look sweet...kinda like the 'R'. Let us know how it goes.
cheers rob

Yep bearings have to come out of the headstock. Also bear in mind youl have to drill out the anti tamper bolts to get the ignition barrel off the top yolk.
PM Bic as im sure he did a `How-To` on this subject but i cant find it!!!

I used a dremel to cut a slot in the anti tamper bolts and just turned em out with a flat screwdriver, the new cnc triple came with allen head bolts
Did the same thing on my mrs punto steering column and just reused em.

Here are a few links which might help. It's an easy job removing/swapping triple-clamps over. Except, like Ash says, for the anti-tamper bolts holding on the ignition barrel.

the top cup and cone isn't a problem, the bottom cone, which is pressed onto the pivot shaft gets in the way of the bottom yoke for painting/powdercoating. depends on how fussy you are i guess, but i'd replace it and the cup in the steering head, that involves taking a grinder to the inner race to get it off.

the bottom yoke has a shaft that runs through the frame, in bearings. the bottom (and top) bearing is in two pieces, the cup, which sits in the frame and the cone, which is pressed onto the shaft on the bottom yoke. the only way to get it off is to break the cage holding the cylindrical rollers and grind the inner race till it breaks, releasing it from the shaft. that bearing sits very close to the yoke and would probably get ruined by the sandblasting and coating process anyway so best off to remove it first.

I removed the bottom bearing with a punch and hammer. A few well placed taps and it came free and came off the shaft.
