AGRO!
I have been thinking for some time about how to fix the on off throttle snatch on the SD and I may have found an easy fix.
I don’t like much play in the throttle cables either.
I always adjust most of the throttle cable slack out On any new bike I get so I end up with about 1mm play or less.
But what I have found on the SD is that it is hard to get it set up as there seems to be a lot of play between the throttle tube and the handle bar and this makes it a bit hard to get things right.
So what I did was place a 100mm length of heat shrink tubing onto the handle bar to take up the play between the throttle tube and the handle bar sorry for not having photo’s but I was just experimenting at the time and didn’t think it would make such a huge difference.
So what you need is thinned walled heat shrink tubing that fits over the handle bar but make sure it’s not too easy to slide onto the handle bar. Sorry can’t give you the size of the heat shrink as it was some old stuff I had laying around. So what I did was take throttle grip “tube” off handle bar you will have to disconnect throttle cables and this is easy just loosen the adjustment at the top and then undo throttle housing and pull out the cables.
Slide the throttle grip off the handle bar clean any grease off handle bar then cut 1x100mm piece of heat shrink tubing and slide onto handle bar. I use some Isopropyl Alcohol as lubrication to make it easier to slide the heat shrink tube onto the handle bar and when it dries the head shrink is pretty much like it was glued in place.
Then I put a small amount of marine grease on the outside of tubing then replaced the throttle grip connected cables and adjust the slack.
Now how I adjust the slack in the cables might not be how most of you like but what I do is turn the handle bars all the way to the left start engine and adjust the cables till the idle just starts to increase then back cables off till idle drops down to normal by doing this it eliminates the on off throttle snatch this works and I used this idea on my old FZ1 and it worked great.
There will be no slack in cable’s with this set up.
The SD runs like a different bike no more snatch and no more throttle jerks when hitting bumps on the road. You might just try the cable adjustment if you like but you will still have the slop between the handle bar and throttle grip.
So can someone else give this a go and let me know what you think.
Thanks Jeff
