Right, so I've downloaded RaceChrono ready for CrashFest but I don't have a lot of time to mess with it now.
So far I've:
- Got a phone with RaceChrono and a Bluetooth connection to a QStarz 818XT
- Created an account and signed in to RaceChrono.
- I *think* I've downloaded Cadwell (just selected it from the library and it now appears in the list under "My Tracks"
Is there anything else I need to do before I leave? The phone is just a cheapo old one with no SIM - I am assuming the app doesn't need a network connection once it's all set?
Any advice much appreciated...

Not sure, but pretty much it runs off bluetooth so no need for a sim.
Looking to get an AIM solo at some point.

I've got an AIM Solo and it was faultless at Donny. Switch it on, knows exactly what track you are at and your off. Great but of kit.

Well, for anyone that's interested in going down the same route, this setup worked really well at CrashFest. I was able to mount the QStarz GPS under the seat and Bluetooth to the phone in my jacket pocket. The GPS lasted all day (turned it off between sessions) and there was no need for the phone to have network or Wifi connection to get the app working.
First time I've run a laptimer and it was really useful to have an objective measure of roughly what my times were. It was particularly useful when trying different lines and gear selections across sessions to see what worked and what didn't.
If you want a cheap(ish) way of analysing your performance but don't have the cash or inclination to spring for a proper big boy laptimer, I would highly recommend this.

Nice one Dubs, thanks for sharing, the external GPS is essential I tried it without with the phone GPS and I was going over fields and through woods!
The Qstarz is £50 delivered off amazon, I'll be getting one to play with, it has lots of scope for other uses too.
